Zakir Hussain Concert!

Zakir Hussain & Masters of Percussion

IAGC will present a rare cultural opportunity for the Charleston community – a traditional Indian music performance by the world’s leading percussionist and Grammy Award winning virtuoso, Zakir Hussain, on Saturday, March 15, 2014.

Hussain was a child prodigy on tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. He was touring at the age of 12, and along with his legendary father and teacher, Ustad Allarakha, he has elevated the status of the tabla, both in India and around the world. He has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, YoYo Ma, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Airto Moreira, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, Mark Morris, Rennie Harris and the Kodo drummers. Hussain is a recipient of the NEA’s National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award given to traditional artists and musicians. He has garnered two Grammy Awards as well as other (Indian) music awards of the same stature. His music and extraordinary contribution to the music world were honored in April 2009, with four widely-heralded and sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Artist Perspective series.

For a small taste of this rhythmic phenomenon, watch this clip with Hussain on the left (start at the 45 min. mark). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqQTOK3kh4E
